Sometimes. It depends how many are affected and where, which John checks on site.
Do you build new roof frames for extensions?
Yes. We cut and fix new hip and gable frames on site.
Do you do the tiling as well?
Yes. Carpentry and covering come from the same team.
Is the quote free?

Can I cut a brace to improve loft access?
A brace can be part of the roof's stability. Have the structure assessed before removing or altering any timber.
Does new roofing timber make my loft suitable for storage?
Storage loading needs its own assessment. A sound roof frame does not establish the capacity of the floor beneath it.

Understand the frame before altering it
- Locate the weakness. A visible dip needs investigation. Follow roof loads through the timbers to their supporting points.
- Establish the cause. Address the moisture source alongside timber work. Otherwise replacement wood remains exposed to the same problem.
- Define the design. Structural changes need an appropriate design before cutting begins. Connections and bearing points matter alongside the dimensions of each timber.
- Plan the opening. The timber position determines how much covering to lift. Discuss the effect on loft storage and rooms below.
- Coordinate the covering. Frame geometry must suit the roof finish. Account for openings, eaves and drainage falls within the timber layout.
Timber work for different roof forms
- Rafter renewal. A damaged rafter needs assessment of its full role and supports. Replacing the visible rotten section alone is not a design.
- Joist replacement. Joist work depends on span, loading and end bearings. Access from above and below affects how the repair can proceed.
- Hip or gable frame. A new frame sets the shape of an extension roof. Its junction with the existing house needs a coordinated detail.
- Porch framing. Even a compact porch needs suitable support for its covering. Its pitch and wall connection determine how rainfall is directed away.
How long roof carpentry takes
A local timber repair and a complete new frame involve different levels of preparation. Opening up, supporting the affected area and resolving hidden deterioration all influence the programme. Structural design or additional assessment needs to be settled before the relevant alterations proceed, rather than during cutting.
