Lead dressed properly, wherever the roof meets something else.
Every roof has weak points where the covering meets a wall, a chimney, a dormer or another slope. Lead is what keeps those joints dry. When it splits, lifts or was never dressed properly in the first place, water gets straight in, and it often shows up some way from the real cause.
We fit step and cover flashings up chimneys and walls, soakers under tiles and slates, aprons and back gutters at the base of stacks, lead valleys between slopes, and lead cladding on dormer cheeks and tops. The photos on this page are our own work, from slate roofs to clay tile abutments.

Why does lead fail?
Age, poor fixing and lead that was never dressed to fit. Thin lead also cracks as it moves with heat.
Can you replace mortar fillets with lead?
Yes. Lead flashings last far longer than mortar fillets at walls and chimneys.
Do you clad dormers in lead?
Yes. We dress lead on dormer cheeks and tops.
Is leadwork included in a re-roof?
Yes. New lead at the chimneys, walls and valleys is part of a proper re-roof.
Does grey colour variation mean the lead is defective?
Lead develops a patina outdoors. Colour alone does not identify leaks; splits, displaced edges and failed junctions need assessment.
Can lead be fixed rigidly along every edge?
Lead needs to accommodate thermal movement. The fixing arrangement must suit the sheet size and the particular roof detail.

Make room for water and movement
- Map the junction. Identify each sheet's start and finish. Water must pass from the covering onto the lead without meeting an exposed reverse lap.
- Assess the support. Uneven backing affects the shape of lead. The support must suit the detail before dressing begins.
- Plan the sections. Sheet layout needs room for temperature movement. Long uninterrupted pieces and crowded corners require particular thought when setting out replacement work.
- Resolve the corners. Wall and slope junctions need effective corner details. The weathering must extend beyond the visible front apron.
- Inspect the discharge. A completed lining needs a clear exit into the next drainage element. Check how its lower edge meets the tile or gutter.
Lead details for different junctions
- Wall abutments. Stepped details follow masonry courses beside a sloping roof. Their layout must account for the tile courses underneath the cover flashing.
- Chimney back gutters. The uphill side of a stack collects runoff before it divides around the chimney. Width and outlets matter as much as appearance.
- Valley linings. Intersecting slopes direct concentrated runoff into a valley. A suitable lining leaves a clear channel beneath the cut roof edges.
- Dormer coverings. Dormer faces introduce vertical seams and exposed corners. Section size and support determine the fit against windows and roofing.
How long leadwork takes
A straightforward abutment progresses faster than a dormer with returns and several corners. Removing surrounding tiles, preparing the backing and forming individual pieces all take time beyond fitting the visible flashing. Access and wet masonry can also affect when the final junction is completed.

Avoid coating new lead with paint or covering it with unrelated sealants. Its surface changes colour as it weathers. Keep valley channels clear through safe maintenance, and ask for advice before another trade fixes cables, brackets or equipment through a newly formed lead detail.
