The stain on your ceiling shows where the water landed, not where it got in. Rain gets under a slipped tile, a cracked slate, split lead or a tired mortar joint, runs along the felt and the timbers, and only then shows indoors. Does an old ceiling mark prove the repair failed?
Discolouration can remain after moisture has dried; a growing wet edge or fresh drip needs another look.
Should I buy replacement tiles before the visit?
Wait until the profile and dimensions are checked. Similar-looking tiles are not automatically interchangeable on your roof.

A repair with clear limits
- Describe the pattern. Tell us whether the drip follows prolonged rain or wind from one direction. This narrows the search.
- Compare both sides. The position of staining inside is compared with the roof layout outside. Previous patches deserve particular attention during this assessment.
- Define the opening. Your scope identifies the section to lift. Roof windows, aerial fixings and pitch changes affect access.
- Check the overlap. Replacement pieces must sit correctly beneath the course above. A tile that looks close in colour still needs the right profile.
- Review the boundary. The junction between repaired and retained roofing matters as much as the new material. You need a continuous route for rainfall.
Choose the right repair detail
- Individual tiles. A local tile replacement suits an isolated break. The surrounding tiles need secure support before a replacement can hold its position.
- Slate repairs. Slate thickness and fixing position influence the repair. Sound adjacent slates should remain undisturbed wherever the detail allows it.
- Junction repairs. An abutment repair addresses the transition between different surfaces. Its extent depends on the condition beneath the exposed edge.
- Valley sections. Repairing a valley requires space for water and debris to pass. Tight tile cuts can obstruct that channel even with fresh lining.
How long roof repairs takes
An isolated defect takes less roof time than several faults across separate slopes. Access preparation can occupy a substantial part of a small repair. Wet surfaces, difficult tile sourcing and hidden damage extend the programme, so arrange the work around the assessed scope.
