Chimneys repointed, rebuilt and made watertight again.

A chimney takes more weather than any other part of the roof. Mortar washes out of the joints, the flaunching around the pots cracks, moss holds water against the brickwork and the lead at the base lifts. Water then runs down inside the stack and shows up as a damp chimney breast in the room below.

We repoint chimney stacks, renew flaunching, fit new pots and cowls, cap disused flues, replace lead flashings and rebuild stacks that have gone past repair. Moss and washed-out mortar are among the most common chimney calls: one customer wrote that John removed moss from the chimney stack and repointed where it was needed.

On the tall Victorian stacks of Ealing, Acton and Harlesden and the shared stacks on Hayes and Northolt semis, we show you the stack with photos before we price it.

Our method

How we repoint a chimney

  1. Full inspection. We look over the mortar, the brickwork and the flashings, with the drone on tall stacks, to find the damage and any water getting in.
  2. Old mortar raked out. Loose and crumbling mortar is raked out by hand with the right tools, so the bricks are not damaged.
  3. Repointed with fresh mortar. New weather-resistant mortar goes into the joints, matched to the original finish as closely as possible.
  4. Bricks replaced where needed. Any brick too far gone is cut out and replaced with a matching one, so the stack stays strong and looks right.
  5. Lead checked and renewed. The flashings at the base of the stack are checked, and cracked or worn lead is repaired or replaced to seal the joint.
  6. Caps or cowls if you want them. Caps and cowls keep rain, birds and debris out while letting the flue breathe.
  7. Clean, tidy finish. Debris is cleared from the roof and the gutters, and you are left with a sound, neat chimney.

Assessed on day one, fixed the next morning

John was very responsive from the start. He turned up on the day of our initial call to assess the job and was back the next morning with Nick to complete the repair. They were polite, punctual, professional, and got the job done right. Five stars!

The most reasonable of three quotes

John was incredibly helpful and communicative throughout the job. His was the 2nd of 3 quotes I secured and was the most reasonable from the start. The other suppliers I met with were pushy, but John was professional and fair from the outset. The repairs were completed quickly and the team left the site in perfect condition.

Immediate response, drone survey

John at Imperial Roofers was so very helpful. An immediate response to my roof repair. We had slipped and potentially dangerous roof slates. John was easy to talk/explained the process and maintained telephone contact. The use of his drone was also constructive. I will definitely keep his details and use him again for any other roof project. Geoff P. 5D Architects Ltd .

Excellent communication, very high standard

From initial contact to the scaffolding coming down and final tidy up, the communication was excellent. I always knew what was going on. The work was carried out extremely quickly (I don’t think I’ve ever seen tradespeople work so quickly), but to a very high standard. The team were polite and helpful. I would highly recommend.

Straight answers about your roof

Can you repoint a chimney rather than rebuild it?
Usually, yes. A rebuild only comes up when the brickwork itself has failed.
Do you replace the lead around the chimney?
Yes. Lead flashings, soakers and back gutters are often the real cause of a chimney leak.
Can you cap a chimney I no longer use?
Yes. Disused flues can be capped with ventilation so they stay dry.
Is chimney work guaranteed?
Yes. The guarantee depends on the work, and John agrees it with you on site and puts it in writing.
Is roof-level chimney repair the same as sweeping?
Masonry and weatherproofing address the stack exterior; cleaning and testing its flue are separate tasks.
Should every pot have the same fitting?
The fitting depends on the connected flue. Appearance alone is not enough to choose a suitable terminal.

Separate the stack's different faults

  1. Establish flue use. Tell us which fireplaces or appliances remain connected. Working and redundant flues require different treatment at the top.
  2. Read the elevations. Damage on the exposed face can differ from the sheltered side. Assessing the whole stack helps define a balanced repair scope.
  3. Examine the crown. The area supporting each pot needs attention beyond its visible surface. Cracks around a pot affect how rain leaves the crown.
  4. Specify compatible repairs. Brick condition and existing mortar guide the repair specification. A hard surface patch is a poor substitute for addressing deteriorated joints.
  5. Explain the remaining work. Your scope should distinguish masonry, pot and roof-junction work. Each addresses a different part of the chimney.

Repair choices for your stack

  • Joint renewal. Repointing addresses mortar loss between sound bricks. The depth and spread of deterioration determine how much of the stack needs attention.
  • Partial rebuilding. Where damage is concentrated near the top, rebuilding that section can retain sound masonry below. The assessment establishes a suitable stopping point.
  • Pot replacement. A replacement pot must suit the stack and its intended use. Retaining the silhouette matters on a prominent street-facing chimney.
  • Ventilated closure. A redundant flue needs a closure that accounts for airflow. Identify its status before choosing a cap or altering its termination.

How long chimney repairs takes

Working above the ridge requires stable access before masonry repairs begin. Repointing a compact stack takes less time than rebuilding several damaged courses. Fresh mortar needs suitable conditions to set, and wind or persistent rain can interrupt the work even when the roof below is accessible.

What affects the price of chimney repairs

  • Stack height above the ridge
  • Depth and spread of brick damage
  • Number and condition of pots
  • Access around every stack face

After your chimney repairs

Keep a record of which flues remain active after chimney work. Arrange the separate appliance or sweeping checks appropriate to their use. Watch the garden for fresh mortar fragments and inspect indoor chimney surfaces for new changes, without climbing onto the roof to investigate.
